The “Panama Papers” and the more recent “Paradise Papers” have reminded us yet again that there seem to be different rules for the powerful and super-rich when it comes to paying tax. Using complicated and purely cosmetic legal and accounting devices, wealthy individuals and large multinational corporations are able to shift their profits to low or nil tax regimes in off-shore tax havens – all carried out legally but many are questioning the underlying morality. The essential raison d’etre of a fair tax system is to finance the common good and we should all contribute to this cost of running a civilised society – the rich, the poor and those in the middle.

Tax avoidance has been in the papers a lot recently and it seems that ordinary people are saying “enough is enough!”. In recognition of this growing sense of public outrage, on Thursday 15th February 2018 at 7pm, Brett Nicholls Associates will be holding a film evening for clients and friends. We will be showing the award-winning documentary film, “UK Gold”. This controversial film looks at the extent of tax avoidance in the UK with emphasis on the long and systemic role of the City of London in global tax avoidance. The film includes interviews with Jon Snow, the well-known Channel 4 New presenter. In the film, Jon says: “I think the ordinary punter is only just beginning to discover about tax avoidance”.

After the film, there will be time for discussion over drinks and nibbles. If you would like to come along, please let us know by emailing sandra@bnassociates.co.uk
